How Long Does a CBCT Scan Take? — A Patient’s Guide From Arrival to Departure

The Question Behind the Question

When patients ask how long a CBCT scan takes, what they are really asking is how much of their day it will consume, how much discomfort they will have to endure, and whether they need to clear their schedule or make special arrangements. These are completely reasonable concerns, and the answers are reassuring. A CBCT scan is one of the fastest and most straightforward medical investigations available. The actual scan itself takes under 20 seconds. The entire visit from arrival to departure takes under 30 minutes in most cases. And there is no recovery time, no aftereffect, and nothing to prevent you from continuing with your normal day the moment you leave.

At Alnoor Diagnostic Centre in Shadman, Lahore, we perform CBCT scans efficiently and comfortably every day for patients referred by dentists, oral surgeons, ENT specialists, and maxillofacial surgeons across the city. This guide breaks down exactly how your time is spent during a CBCT scan appointment so there are no surprises when you arrive.

The Actual Scan — Under 20 Seconds

The most important number to understand is that the CBCT scan itself — the moment the machine is actively rotating and capturing images — takes between 10 and 20 seconds. That is the entire duration of radiation exposure. The scan arm completes its rotation around your head in that brief window, capturing hundreds of images that are instantly transmitted to the processing system. You will hear a soft mechanical hum as the arm rotates. Then it stops. The scan is done.

Different CBCT machines and different scanning protocols have slightly different rotation times. A small field of view scan targeting a single tooth region may complete in 10 seconds. A large field of view full jaw scan may take closer to 20 seconds. Either way, the active scanning phase is measured in seconds, not minutes.

Time in the Scanning Room — 5 to 10 Minutes

While the scan itself takes under 20 seconds, your time in the scanning room will be slightly longer because of the preparation required immediately before the scan. When you are brought into the scanning area, our radiographer will ask you to remove any remaining metal accessories — earrings, glasses, hearing aids, removable dental appliances — if you have not already done so. You will be positioned at the machine, which is completely open on all sides with no enclosed tunnel or confined space.

The radiographer will position your head carefully using the chin rest and forehead support built into the machine. Proper head positioning is important for image quality — your head must be aligned correctly relative to the scanning field so that the area of clinical interest is captured completely and without distortion. This positioning takes a minute or two. You will be asked to remain still, close your eyes or focus on a fixed point, and breathe normally during the scan. The radiographer steps behind a protective screen, confirms you are positioned correctly, and initiates the scan.

After the scan, the radiographer confirms the images have been captured successfully before you step away from the machine. In some cases a repeat scan is needed if movement occurred during the rotation — though this is uncommon with cooperative patients who understand what to expect. Your total time in the scanning room from entry to exit is typically five to ten minutes.

Image Processing — Immediate and Automatic

One of the practical advantages of modern CBCT technology is that image processing is automatic and immediate. The moment the scan is complete, the raw data captured during the rotation is processed by the machine’s computer into the three-dimensional dataset from which the radiologist will work. This happens within minutes without requiring any additional time from the patient. You can leave the scanning area while processing occurs in the background.

Total Visit Duration — Under 30 Minutes

From the moment you arrive at Alnoor Diagnostic Centre to the moment you leave, a typical CBCT scan appointment takes between 20 and 30 minutes. This includes the brief check-in with our reception team, completing any patient information forms if you are a new patient, removing metal accessories, being positioned and scanned, and receiving any immediate instructions before departure.

Patients who arrive with their referral letter, have left metal jewellery at home, and have brought their removable dental appliances already removed move through this process at the faster end of the range. Patients who require more time for positioning due to limited neck mobility or other physical considerations may take slightly longer, but the overall process remains well within 30 minutes for virtually all patients.

This is significantly faster than most other medical imaging investigations. An MRI scan of the same region takes 30 to 60 minutes inside the scanner alone, plus preparation and recovery time. Even a standard medical CT scan of the head involves more preparation and a longer process overall. The CBCT scan’s combination of a brief scan time, minimal preparation requirements, and no recovery period makes it among the most time-efficient diagnostic investigations available.

The Radiologist Report — When Will Your Doctor Receive It?

An important aspect of the total timeline is when the radiologist report will be ready for your referring doctor. The images from your CBCT scan are reviewed by our experienced radiologists who prepare a detailed, clinically relevant report describing the findings and their significance for your specific clinical question.

At Alnoor Diagnostic Centre, reports are prepared promptly so that your dentist, oral surgeon, or ENT specialist can begin or adjust your treatment plan without unnecessary delay. In most cases your report is available the same day or the following working day. If your case has been flagged as urgent by your referring doctor, we prioritise accordingly. Ask our team at the time of your appointment about the expected turnaround for your specific scan.

Does the Type of CBCT Scan Affect the Time?

Different types of CBCT scans — small field of view for a single tooth or joint, medium field of view for a jaw segment, large field of view for a full mouth or facial skeleton — have marginally different scan times, but the differences are measured in seconds rather than minutes. From the patient’s perspective, all types of CBCT scan feel essentially the same. The positioning and preparation time is the same regardless of the field of view selected.

No Recovery Time — Continue Your Day Normally

Unlike procedures involving sedation or contrast injections, a CBCT scan has absolutely no recovery period. The moment your scan is complete you can drive, work, eat, exercise, and engage in all normal activities without any restriction. There is no aftereffect on alertness, coordination, or physical function. You do not need someone to accompany you home. You do not need to rest afterward. The convenience of a CBCT scan extends beyond its brevity — it places no demands on your day beyond the appointment itself.
